7 Ways to Care for Your Puppy This Winter

The months of December to February can be freezing. This cold affects not just us humans, but our furry friends too. The temperature is usually at an all-time low, and the chill in the air is almost unbearable. It is your responsibility to care for your new puppy at this time. Think of their comfort as well as yours. Here are seven ways to care for your puppy this winter.

  • Keep Your Puppy Indoors

Protect your puppy from being exposed to the chill before they catch a cold. As it will be chilly and windy, make sure they stay inside. If they find their way outside of your home, do your best to bring them back indoors.

  • Wrap Your Puppy Up

Can you picture yourself sleeping in the winter without a sweater or jacket? The answer is no. This applies to your puppy too. Wrap them up in wool sweaters and jackets. They'll keep your puppy warm and cozy just like you.

  • Make Their Bedding Warm

Please don't let your puppy sleep on the icy floor during winter. This could make your puppy sick. Get bedding or mattress for your furry friends and see how much they'll love snuggling in it. Make sure you set it up in a warm spot too, preferably somewhere that is carpeted. Just make sure it's a place your puppy is already familiar with.

  • Put the Room Heater Away

Your puppy loves to move around and explore. Please do not leave your room heater, lamps, or any other heating source lying around. You don't want your puppy to get too close while exploring and come away with burns. You can take them away and put them in a safe place where your puppy cannot reach.

  • Change Your Puppy's Drinking Water Often

You'll discover that your puppy feels less thirsty in the winter. It's just like with us humans. Sometimes, the water in their drinking bowl gets so cold that they do not want to drink it. Change the water in your puppy's drinking bowl every one to two hours to avoid this.

  • No Shaving

The winter is a terrible time for shaving. Puppies are blessed with thick fur that keeps them warm naturally. If you shave that off, you'd be exposing your puppy to the cold. You should also avoid taking your puppy out for walks immediately after giving it a bath. You have to let the coat dry out completely before you go on walks outdoors.

  • Wrap Up on Walks

Your puppy needs regular walks in the winter. So, no matter how cozy it may be inside, you have to take them on walks. When out, make sure you wrap your puppy up nice and warm. A dog coat is a great idea and will keep your puppy safe from the cold.
